Tourists in Milan’s famous Piazza Duomo were left stunned Sunday afternoon after a man plunged from the rooftop of the city’s iconic cathedral in a shocking and tragic turn of events.
The man, 35-year-old Emanuele De Maria, fell “dozens of meters” around 2 p.m. local time, startling onlookers and narrowly missing a young boy clutching a stuffed animal. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic and heartbreaking.
“I saw a black blur fall fast. Then there was a loud thud, like a gunshot,” recalled bar owner Emanuele Sanità. “People ran in every direction. My bar emptied out in seconds.”

De Maria, a convicted murderer, died instantly. Paramedics arrived quickly, but there was nothing they could do. His identity was confirmed by his tattoos.
Just days earlier, De Maria had gone missing after allegedly stabbing a co-worker, 50-year-old Hani Fouad Abdelghaffar, at the Berna Hotel, where both men worked. De Maria had been on a day-release work program from Bollate Prison, where he was serving time for a previous murder.

Police launched a manhunt after the stabbing, worried he may have fled north toward Europe. Their concern wasn’t unfounded—back in 2016, De Maria fled to the Netherlands after killing a 23-year-old woman in southern Italy. He was eventually caught in Germany in 2018 and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
On Sunday, Abdelghaffar was reportedly in stable condition after undergoing emergency surgery for stab wounds to his neck and chest.

Now, police are hoping to speak with Abdelghaffar to learn more about the motive behind the attack—and possibly, another disturbing lead. Authorities are investigating the suspicious death of a 50-year-old Sri Lankan woman who worked at the same hotel and vanished on Friday. Her body was later discovered, and investigators believe her death may also be linked to De Maria.
While answers are still unfolding, Milan remains in shock. What started as a quiet afternoon in the city’s heart ended in horror, leaving behind grief, fear, and unanswered questions.
